The duties of divorced parents when children go back to school

Just as divorced parents become accustomed to the change that comes with summer break, they must adjust to an annual event a few months later.

“Back-to-school” time.

In addition to the resumption of their standard custody and visitation agreements, ex-spouses must band together to get their children ready for the upcoming academic year. While detailed divorce decrees should spell out the specifics, the coming of the school year will likely contain unexpected matters not considered when the dissolution was drafted. That is especially true if the marriage ended before children were of school age.

Preparation for the school year usually sees a deluge of forms and other paperwork that comes from the school. Whether together or separately, both parents should review them with attention to every detail.

One of those documents will likely detail the supplies necessary for the coming nine months. Even with 50/50 custodian arrangements, parents should take equal responsibility for school-related, out-of-pocket expenses (clothing, lunch money, etc.), based on each party’s individual income.

Once the school year begins, parents should work together to ensure adherence to their children’s schedules. Custody “swaps” should be kept away from the schoolyard and both mom and dad should resist the temptation of using their kids to relay messages.

They should also take an active role in helping with homework and after-school activities, including transportation to and from.

Regardless of the time of year, the end of a marriage does not end the responsibility of parents who should team up, not take opposing sides. If you and your ex-spouse are involved in custody or support-related disputes, contact VanAntwerp Attorneys, LLP, at 606-618-0698.
