The personal and legal challenges blended families face

Getting life back on track for divorced parents is often challenging. Equally complicated, if not extremely stressful, is a remarriage involving a new spouse who also has children from a previous relationship.

While happily portrayed in television series and movies, life for blended families rarely is an experience akin to The Brady Bunch. In fact, a more accurate depiction may be, "The Parent Trap."

Keeping the peace in a newly blended family helps to sidestep the numerous inherent pitfalls during significant, life-changing times. Minimizing those traps starts with having both ex-spouses in agreement regarding child support and other financial matters. From there, continuously open lines of communication regarding future accommodations or changes to custody or visitation plans are paramount.

When merging two family units into one, the children's best interests are best served when they enjoy active relationships with stepparents. Their critical role is to be understanding and compassionate to their feelings and the circumstances as kids adapt to a new marriage. Undermining authority or deliberately standing in the way of another parent's ability to spend time with their children could lead not only relationship problems, but also legal issues.

In the end, blended families are not alone in difficulties. They share the same issues nuclear families do on a daily basis. Both parents and stepparents need to be proactive when they are involved in a new family arrangement. If existing court orders are impacted and need to be adapted, the help of an attorney is paramount
