Foregoing estate planning knows no age group

The older you get, the more likely you are to have a will or trust is not a surprising statistic. However, a more alarming stat is the staggering number of people overall who lack any type of estate plan.

Caring.com conducted a recent study that showed 58 percent of American adults admitted not to have these crucial documents in place. Perhaps more troubling is that adults with children under the age of 18 saw the figure climb to 64 percent.

Specific data on the percentage of people who do have a will or trust in place revealed:

  • 18 to 36 – 22 percent
  • 37 to 52 – 36 percent
  • 53 to 71 – 60 percent
  • 72 and older – 81 percent

Brimming with youth and/or confidence is one thing. Presuming that there is plenty of time to take care of important matters is quite another. Not taking the proactive steps necessary to protect a spouse, children and other family members can create upheaval during difficult times. No amount of money or number of assets can replace such a personal loss for loved ones.

The Caring.com study cited the most common excuses for neglecting a will or trust. The two at the top of the list were a lack of assets and simply not getting around to it yet.

The question is, if not now, then when. Estate planning will force you to face your own mortality. It is a process may seem disturbing, but is highly necessary. Putting your wishes into formal legal documents gives you a say in distribution of your assets, no matter how few or how many.

If anything can be learned from the Caring.com study is that, it is never too early to create a will or trust. However, it can be too late. Contact an estate planning attorney today.
